The winner of the 2018 Graduate Student Award, with a certificate and $ 150 check is  Saskia van Wees, University of Florida; Paper title: ‘Normative Pressure and Environmental Governance’

  • Her paper explores explainations to various states’ diverging reactions to normative pressure, where we observe that some states embrace Western norms on environmental protection, while other states ignore them or simply dismiss them as tools of imperialism.
  • The paper builds on recent critical constructivist work, and examines characteristics internal to states, such as state capacity, economic position, civil society pressures, press freedom, and constructions of identity, for example—can we better understand why some states are more or less responsive to normative criticism related to environmental governance.
