Green School Program. As part of their educational outreach programs, the Alliance to Save Energy sponsors the Green Schools Program, which helps schools use energy efficiently through changes in the behavior of building users and changes in operational and maintenance routines. In addition, Green Schools encourages schools to get retrofits, install renewable technology, and bring the energy efficiency message home and into the community. The Green Schools Program combines conservation and education in a way that strengthens schools, involves students in making a real difference, encourages teamwork, and fosters community involvement. MIT’s Environmental Virtual Campus, an award-winning web-based tool designed to aid colleges to comply with federal environmental regulations and implement “green” practices, has attracted more than 10,000 visitors from 71 countries since it went public six months ago. The EVC, hosted at http://www.c2e2.org/evc, is free to users and employs an engaging and intuitive format to provide information about campuses’ environmental compliance and “green” environmental practices, such as recycling, pollution prevention, and energy savings. The tool allows users to “navigate” a virtual campus and identify the federal regulatory requirements and best management practices applicable to nine generic areas on a typical campus that are subject to federal environmental regulation.

Foundation for Urban and Regional Studies (FURS), Research Grants in Urban and Regional Studies. Disciplines supported include Sociology, Political Science, Geography, Economics, Law, Anthropology and History. The sponsor seeks to promote urban and regional research, and is particularly interesting in encouraging an understanding of the interconnection between social, economic and political processes and of the broader causes and effects of these processes. This means, for example, that research which examines policies critically and focuses on their unintended, as well as intended, consequences is more likely to be supported than research on managerially defined questions. Conversely, research that takes a technical approach to urban and regional questions and does not place them within wider contexts of understanding is unlikely to be given priority. Although these concerns are likely to lead to social scientists such as sociologists, political scientists, geographers, economists and town planners predominating among applicants, others such as lawyers, cultural theorists, anthropologists and historians should not be discouraged from applying. Applications are invited for a number of research grants. There are no formal eligibility rules. On the other hand, given the aims of FURS, the Trustees will normally give preference to citizens of low and middle income countries. They are particularly concerned to provide support for urban and regional researchers in Eastern Europe, Africa, Latin America and Asia. The Trustees are anxious to encourage newly graduated researchers or junior colleagues of established researchers who have difficulty in getting funds to support research. Grants are for up to £2,000. For more information, visit the Foundation Web site at: http://www.iser.essex.ac.uk/furs/funding/grants/index.php. Contact: Foundation for Urban and Regional Studies; Institute for Social and Economic Research; University of Essex; Wivenhoe Park; Colchester, Essex CO4 3SQ; Email: furs@essex.ac.uk.
